Tanzania is faced with heft challenge on solid waste management, Dar Es Salaam along as a commercial & populated city is struggling to cope with the amount of solid waste produced in which more than 50% goes for open burning, illegal landfill, littering the ocean etc. Despite having all these challenges, we even understood that some of the recyclables waste e. g cardboard were imported, which brought as into attention to look at this as an opportunity to create jobs as we clean our environment while discouraging importation of these recyclable waste.
Since 2016 Allen Kimambo has been able to mobilize collection and recycle more than 3million kilos of cardboard waste which has benefited more than 200 people who are involved in collection, sorting, baling, loading and administration. Apart from social-economic gain the initiative has also contributed into saving more than 50,000 trees which were to be cut to make the same quantity of waste paper/cardboard which were discarded to release methane and carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Our operation has now grown to reach 300,000kgs of waste paper/card board per month. A story I hear from my people is that they have managed to construct their houses, pay house rent, pay school fees for their children’s, pay house bills due to this initiative, and there are more stories, even more to come with the #TakaNiAjira /#WasteIsEmploymet drive
